Valueable “Must Have” Reading Material
These are various books that I feel are an enormous benefit to the tradition from the beginner to the more intermediate practitioner.
Paganism-An introduction to Earth-Based Religions
by Joyce Higgenbotham
Comments: This is my first pagan book and i feel I made the right choice in choosing it. It helps you recognize what you believe and how to be flexable with your belief system. I honestly think this is the main thing that we all struggle with. Do I really believe this? This book helps filter out what you’ve been tought, what society, friends and family imposes on you to shape your belief system to others standards. It shows you how to erase all that and look within yourself.
Women’s Rites, Women’s Mysteries: Creating Ritual In The Dianic Wiccan Tradition
by Ruth Barrett
Comments: I strongly reccomend this to anyone wanting to learn to perform their own rituals. Even if you aren’t a Dianic this is still a wonderful resouce on ritual construction from beginiing to end. This will help guide you and set you on the path to creating your own effective rituals. Not just for holidays and birthdays but for any personal milestone or personal monumental event in your life.
Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs
by Scott Cunningham
Comments: This invaluable book is indespensable for anyone studying and utilizing herb magic. This book has become a classic in its field. Paul Beyerl, a respected author on herbs calls it “…an essential reference book by students of herbalism and magick alike … Scott’s personable charm touches every page… I highly recommend this book.” And Jeanne Rose, famous author of books on herbs and developer of an herbal course says “I love books like this … It is accessible, easy to read, and with its encompassing index (all too often neglected), simple to use as well.” Over 200,000 people already have this book and use it frequently.
In this edition of the book (it’s expanded and revised on the 15th anniversary of original publication) you will find the magical properties and folklore of over 400 herbs!
Wicca : A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner
by Scott Cunningham
Comments: Another book by Scott Cunningham. This book is perfect for the beginner on the path to Wicca. It covers everything from information about the Wheel of the Year, Creating an Altar, Protection, Cleansing your space and even how to utilize your altar tools! Highly reccommended or anyone just starting out!
Living Wicca : A Further Guide for the Solitary Practitioner
by Scott Cunningham
Comments: This is the second part of Scott’s Wicca : A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner. It has a nice section on creating one’s own Book of Shadows.
The Spiral Dance : A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess
by Starhawk
Comments: It is very rare for me to find a book that intrigues me as much as this one did. With all the beginner books out there that just deal with the same material rehashed, this book covers the theory behind the practice in a very refreshing light.
Drawing Down the Moon : Witches, Druids, Goddess-Worshippers, and Other Pagans in America Today
by Margot Adler
Comments: What self-respecting Pagan does not have this book on his or her shelf??? I had to buy this book three times because I would never get back my loaners. This book explores the history of the “Old Religion” as well as many forms of Pagansm. The Appendix lists many useful resources.
Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft
by Raymond Buckland
Comments: This workbook-styled text is broken down into lessons with tests at the end. Many study circles have been designed around this book. I don’t always agree with everything the author says, but it is definately a great choice for the beginner.
Wheel of the Year : Living the Magical Life (Llewellyn’s Practical Magick Series)
by Pauline Campanelli, Dan Campanelli (Illustrator)
Comments: This is a very nice book. It helps one incorporate the seasons and sabbats into one’s everyday life. There is a chapter for each month. I like to read each chapter for the month as it begins.
Llewellyn’s Witches’ 2008 Calendar or Llewellyn’s Witches’ 2008 Datebook
Comments: indepsensable calendar and datebook to co-inside with your rituals for holiday and moons. Also shows when the sun signs enter the months, the moon signs enters and the waxing and waning moon. Full of information, folklore and even recipies! They have a great one for Samhain Pumpkin Bread.
